Preparing Your HVAC System for Winter Storms

Published by Jennifer Fletcher

The winter season can be unpredictable in the face of snow storms, which is why preparing ahead of time is critical. Apparently, the best way to ensure you stay safe from the cold is to prepare your HVAC units. This may seem like an easy task, but it’s always best for homeowners to know the most effective ways to do this. Here we’ve put together some tips for preparing your heating system to keep your family safe and warm.

 HVAC For Winter Storm

Schedule a heating system inspection. Like any other appliance, inspection for maintenance is essential for your unit to combat future costly repairs and replacements. This way, your technician can quickly check whether there are issues with the filters, motor and electrical switches.

Checking heat pumps. Air conditioning service experts say heat pumps are designed to prevent snow from collecting on top of the units. While they’re easy to maintain during heavy snow or ice, it’s wise to check to make sure your heat pump is still operating smoothly. Clear snow from the top, sides, underneath and around the unit to allow for proper drainage while it’s defrosting.

Prioritizing maintenance and insulation. The most important practice to keep in mind is to regularly schedule preventative maintenance for all your system’s components. Have your furnace, boiler, heat pump, thermostats and outside vents cleaned and checked. If you don’t want to risk damaging your equipment, get a professional tune-up before any storms arise.

Moreover, proper insulation lowers energy bills throughout summer and winter and creates a more temperature-controlled environment. If you find drafty areas in your home, consider adding insulation or sealing windows. Poor attic insulation is a huge source of heat loss during the winter months.

Have a backup. This can be done by investing in a generator. If you’re unsure which options are ideal for your system, you can ask for a professional technician to assist you or provide you with the best recommendations.
