Reducing or Avoiding Bad Indoor Air Quality

Published by Jennifer Fletcher

Having good, clean indoor air to breathe is essential in leading a healthy lifestyle. Most people spend a significant amount of time working or living indoors, where gases, chemicals and other pollutants pose health risks that may affect their day-to-day life. These indoor air pollutants can have serious long-term effects on one’s health, so as a homeowner, it’s in your best interest to keep your indoor air clean and safe to breathe. What should you keep in mind to avoid if you want to prevent bad indoor air quality? HVAC expert Modern Air Solutions is here to provide the answers!

Avoiding Bad Indoor Air Quality

Candles. Surprisingly, candles are a threat to your home’s indoor air quality. Most commercially-available candles, even those that aren’t aromatic, contain volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that permeate the air within your home as they burn. Candles are usually made with paraffin, a substance that’s derived from petroleum, so every time you burn candles around your house, they actually emit the same toxins that diesel fuels give off when they combust. So to maintain good indoor air quality, reduce or outright avoid the use of candles in indoor spaces.

Strong cleaning products. Strong household cleaning products, like anti-bacterial sprays containing chlorine and liquid bleach, can cause significant problems with your indoor air quality. They contain a lot of hazardous VOCs, which stay on the surfaces on which they’re used and linger in the air. This  is bad for anyone’s respiratory health if inhaled directly. When performing air conditioning service or other services yourself, always opt for natural household cleaners like vinegar and baking soda.

Ventilation. The easiest way to be rid of bad indoor air is to have good ventilation. When pollutants, fumes and stale air don’t have an outlet or can’t circulate out of your house, this tends to cause issues with the overall condition of your indoor air. Always check your exhaust fans, clean them appropriately and make sure that the intake and output of the exhaust are unobstructed to assure smooth ventilation.
