What You Need to Know About HVAC Condenser Pads

Published by Jennifer Fletcher

As a homeowner, you need to understand that the motion of your outdoor HVAC unit causes rapid vibrations. Without a proper condenser pad, it will slowly sink into the ground over time. To understand how condenser pads work and whether you need one for your air conditioner, our heating repair specialists at Modern Air Solutions explain what you need to know below:

How Do HVAC Condenser Pads Work?

An HVAC condenser pad is a thick pad designed to provide a flat, stable surface for the outdoor unit to be installed on. Condenser pads can be manufactured in either concrete or a composite material, but they’re all designed to raise the unit off the ground to protect it from moisture as well as small animals and pests.

Do You Need Condenser Pads?

If you’re having an outdoor HVAC unit installed, then the heating and air conditioning installation technician you hire will also install condenser pads as part of the process. This is because the pads provide greater stability to your unit to help keep it in place and ensure it runs smoothly. It’s also waterproof and weatherproof, so it won’t deteriorate quickly when exposed to rain, snow or even sunlight.

What to Consider

  • Material – There are two types to choose from. You can have one made from concrete, which works well for large-capacity units. If you have a smaller HVAC unit, however, it may be better to get one made from a composite material such as recycled plastic or rubber.
  • Size – Typically, it’s better to get a condenser pad with slightly larger dimensions than your unit’s footprint dimensions. This is to ensure it has enough support and stability during operation.
  • Durability – It’s important to get a condenser pad that can withstand different temperatures and weather conditions. If a pad isn’t waterproof, it can become waterlogged over time and cause your unit to sink slowly. It should also be resistant to UV light so that it won’t crack under intense sunlight.
