How Often Should You Check & Replace HVAC Filters?

Published by Jennifer Fletcher

The primary function of air filters is to catch dust, mold, dander and other contaminants to ensure proper airflow through your HVAC system. Over time, however, they become caked with excess dirt, restricting airflow and preventing the equipment from working properly. To ensure your furnace, heat pump or air conditioner provides consistent indoor comfort, replacing dirty air filters is a must.

Replace HVAC Filters

Here local heating and air conditioning service specialist Modern Air Solutions explains everything you need to know about this crucial home maintenance task.

How Often Should You Check Your Air Filters?

Check your HVAC filters every month to see how much dirt and debris they’ve accumulated and determine whether they need to be replaced right away. If you have disposable air filters, just replace them with fresh new ones. Never attempt to clean and reuse them.

How Often Should You Replace Your Air Filters?

The recommended interval for replacing HVAC filters is every three months. This, however, could vary depending on the type of filters you use. The more efficient they are at removing airborne contaminants, the more frequently they’ll need to be replaced. Also, you may have to replace filters more often if you live with family members who suffer from allergies and other respiratory issues or if you have pets in your home.

How to Tell If Your Air Filters Need Replaced

In addition to checking your HVAC system’s air filters regularly, there are other ways to determine if they need to be replaced. Specifically, consider looking for the following signs:

  • The unit is getting too hot – Restricted airflow caused by clogged air filters will cause the system to work harder than usual, becoming too hot to touch. Failure to replace them in a timely manner could reduce the lifespan of the unit.

  • Not enough warm or cool air – Too much dust and debris on the air filters can also prevent the unit from providing enough warm or cool air.

  • Respiratory issues in your household – If you notice some of your family members are coughing or sneezing more than usual while indoors, this could mean the clogged air filters are no longer able to trap airborne particles. At this point, you should check your air filters and replace them immediately.
