A compromised heating and cooling system can reduce your home’s comfort and even increase energy bills. One way to keep your HVAC system in good shape is through regular maintenance and addressing problems as soon as they arise. However, not all issues require professional AC or heating repair.
Here are things to check before scheduling an HVAC service appointment.
Your Cooling Isn’t Working
A tripped circuit breaker can cause your cooling system to stop working. It’s also possible that your thermostat is not set correctly. Try resetting your circuit breaker and if it doesn’t work, try turning your thermostat on and off. Another thing you can do is to turn off your thermostat controls for one to three hours to see if your system resets itself. Contact a technician if the air coming from the vents remains warm.
You Have No Heating
If you have no heating at home, check if the shut-off valve of the furnace is switched off. This problem can also be caused by a tripped circuit breaker, so try resetting it. You may also try turning your thermostat on and off and then set it to your desired temperature. A heating service may be necessary if none of these troubleshooting works.
Increasing Energy Bills
Your energy costs can soar if your thermostat is set to a temperature that’s significantly lower or higher than the outside temperature. It will cause your system to work harder than it should, resulting in higher utility costs. You can try setting your thermostat to a more moderate temperature. However, you should also check with your utility company as it might have increased the rates.
